HEPATITIS B TESTING

Hepatitus B Virus (HBV) tests check for substances in the blood that show whether a Hepatitus B Infection is active or has occured in the past. The tests detect for different signs of infection (markers).

What is Hepatitis B?

Hepatitis B is a virus that infects the liver. Most adults who contract Hepatitis B have it for a short time and recover (also known as acute Hepatitis B).

You can have Hepatitis B and not know about it. General symptoms include flu-like symptoms, which is why most might not be aware they have Hepatitis B. As long as you have the virus, you can spread it to others.

In some cases the virus can cause a long-term infection, called chronic Hepatitis B. Over time, it can damage the liver. Babies and young children infected with the virus are more likely to get chronic Hepatitis B.
